Yale Gathering for Life and Truth
CL Secretary John Whitehead staffed an exhibit table at the 2nd annual Vita et Veritas Conference, which Consistent Life co-sponsored, at Yale University on September 19-20. Serrin Foster, of CL member group Feminists for Life, spoke about the long tradition of pro-life feminism, from Mary Wollstonecraft to Equal Rights Amendment author Alice Paul—who declared that “abortion is the ultimate exploitation of women”—and beyond. She also described Feminists for Life’s long-running efforts to build a society that supports pregnant women and mothers, particularly on college campuses. Kelsey Hazzard of CL member group Secular ProLife spoke on a panel with Christian and Muslim activists to discuss how people of varying faiths or no faith can promote the pro-life cause. Kelsey commented, “If you look at sex trafficking, the battle against sex trafficking, and the various organizations that are moving forward in that cause, many of them are Christian . . . People don’t think about it as ‘if you’re fighting sex trafficking and you’re motivated by your religion, you’re violating the separation of Church and State.’ Nobody thinks that way, because it’s silly. And I think our goal ultimately is to have abortion put in that same kind of frame. We should all be working together to end it, because it really is a human rights issue.” (Watch video of the panel discussion here.)

Quotation of the Week Shelley Douglass “Nonviolence and Feminism,” 1975
For years we’ve asked the Catholic Church: “How come you’re so upset about abortion but say nothing about [the American war in] Vietnam?” As Daniel Berrigan has pointed out, that question can legitimately be turned back upon us. We have been concerned about Vietnam, but what about abortion?
