{"id":5345,"date":"2024-04-16T14:19:48","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T18:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/?p=5345"},"modified":"2024-07-16T12:29:30","modified_gmt":"2024-07-16T16:29:30","slug":"coerced-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/04\/16\/coerced-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Coerced Abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>by Sarah Terzo<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>An Attempt to Ban Coerced Abortion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A bill passed in Kansas would\u2019ve made coerced abortion a crime, had it not been vetoed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kslegislature.org\/li\/b2023_24\/measures\/documents\/hb2436_enrolled.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill 2436<\/a> banned:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Threatening to harm or physically restrain an individual or the creation or execution of any scheme, plan, or pattern intended to cause an individual to believe that failure to perform an act would result in financial harm to, or physical restraint of, an individual;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Abusing or threatening abuse of the legal system, including threats of arrest or deportation without regard to whether the individual being threatened is subject to arrest or deportation under state or federal law;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Knowingly destroying, concealing, removing, confiscating, or possessing any actual or purported passport or other immigration document . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Facilitating or controlling an individual\u2019s access to a controlled substance . . .<\/p>\n<p>Sex traffickers whose victims are undocumented couldn\u2019t use victims\u2019 immigration status to blackmail them into unwanted abortions.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of \u201cfinancial harm\u201d in the bill included predatory loans with unfair interest, illegal conditions placed on wages, extortion, or \u201cany other adverse financial consequence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many women have come forward with stories of coerced abortion.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Inspired by Her Own Story<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Kansas Rep. Rebecca Schmoe introduced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kslegislature.org\/li\/b2023_24\/measures\/hb2813\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Bill 2813<\/a>, a precursor to 2436. Her own experience inspired her. Her doctor spent an hour trying to bully her into an abortion when she was pregnant with her son, who is now 21. The doctor told her the pregnancy would kill her.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/kansas-house-committee-considers-abortion-coercion-bill-funding-anti-abortion-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schmoe says<\/a>, \u201cI was called selfish at least 10 times, then I stopped counting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kslegislature.org\/li\/b2023_24\/committees\/ctte_h_fed_st_1\/documents\/testimony\/20240312_14.pdf\">testimony before the legislature<\/a>, she says the doctor told her:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Why are you being so selfish? How dare you make your parents watch you die? . . . Your selfish decision to even try to carry a baby will result in your parents having to pick out a coffin for their own daughter. Why would you do that to them? . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">It\u2019s not even a big deal, just an outpatient appointment. Don\u2019t your parents deserve that? No one even has to know. You\u2019ll never even have to think about it again. Or you can go ahead and die a slow painful death and destroy your parents life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">The baby is half dead already. You aren\u2019t saving anyone. The baby is going to die inside you and take you with it. It is selfish to put your family through this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">You have to make the appointment right now. You can\u2019t leave the office without making the appointment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5346\" style=\"width: 521px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Schmoe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5346\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5346\" src=\"http:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Schmoe-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"511\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Schmoe-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Schmoe-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Schmoe-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Schmoe.jpg 1168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rebecca Schmoe<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Women Forced into Abortion by Clinic Workers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/savethestorks.com\/2017\/12\/strapped-forced-abortion-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">woman described a forced abortion<\/a> at Planned Parenthood. She changed her mind on the abortion table:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I told them that I did not want to do this. I had changed my mind \u2026 The doctor began to tell me that I didn\u2019t need a baby and that I had my whole life ahead of me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I began to cry harder, and they strapped me down. I asked them to please unstrap me and let me leave. The anesthesia was administered, and I fell asleep to the sound of their laughter.<\/p>\n<p>Catherine Glenn Foster, now president of Americans United for Life, was 19\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cbn.com\/cbnnews\/us\/2018\/january\/i-had-four-people-holding-me-down-woman-recounts-horror-of-forced-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when she endured<\/a>\u00a0a forced abortion:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I said \u201cplease let me up. Let me off this table, out of this room. I don\u2019t want this anymore.\u201d I said, \u201cI can\u2019t do this. This is wrong and I feel really bad about this. Just let me go. You can keep the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">And they shouted for more people, and I had four people holding me down. One\u2014a nurse\u2014and a staff member on each arm. The doctor aborted my child. I\u2019m screaming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Another young woman named Crystal wanted her baby, but her boyfriend insisted on an abortion. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-forces-abortion-scream\/\">She says<\/a>, \u201cI was never asked what I wanted to do about the baby, he decided for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">On the operating table, Crystal changed her mind and told the abortionist to stop, but he ignored her:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">As I lay back on the bed, I started sternly saying no several times. That\u2019s when the doctor had the nurses hold me down\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I yelled, \u201cSTOP! I can\u2019t do this!\u201d That is when the doctor told me, \u201cDon\u2019t scream, you\u2019ll scare the other patients.\u201d I felt violated and threatened, both physically and emotionally.<\/p>\n<p>She said the abortion was \u201cexcruciating.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5347\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Foster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5347\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5347\" src=\"http:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Foster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Foster.jpg 400w, https:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Foster-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/consistent-life.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1-blog-Foster-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catherine Glenn Foster<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pressured into an Abortion by Others<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In other cases, parents pressure teens. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/father-suicide-coerce-teen-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Layla was 15<\/a> and wanted to keep her baby. But when her father learned about her pregnancy, she said, he \u201cwent ballistic\u201d:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">[T]he father who had once called me his little princess relentlessly beat me down\u2026My father never let up day in and day out. I was in a torture chamber. Only the prison cell was my home . . .<\/p>\n<p>Her father told her he\u2019d commit suicide unless she aborted.<\/p>\n<p>This terrified Layla. She said, \u201cI was being asked to make a horrific choice: the death of my child, or the death of my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Layla gave in and aborted.<\/p>\n<p>Lorijo and her husband were poor when she became pregnant. She didn\u2019t want an abortion. He did and threatened to leave her. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/woman-coerced-deceived-traumatized-aborted-head\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the most serious coercion<\/a> came from her caseworker at the welfare office.<\/p>\n<p>The caseworker berated Lorijo and threatened her, then called Planned Parenthood and made her an abortion appointment. Afraid of losing her benefits, Lorijo had the abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The first time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/woman-bulldozed-three-abortions-boyfriend-abortion-worker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary became pregnant<\/a>, she was happy and wanted to keep the baby. But when she told her abusive boyfriend, he \u201cflew into a terrifying rage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He demanded she abort and ignored her pleas. She agreed to go to an abortion facility and speak to someone. She said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I was crying my eyes out . . . I knew it was impossible for me to stand up to my boyfriend on my own, but I thought that this \u201ccounselor\u201d could support me and perhaps help him see reason.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Instead, she sided with him. I now had two people haranguing me. I was saying over and over that I wanted to have the baby, but the two of them just bulldozed over me completely. I felt cornered. I was sitting down, and they were both standing over me. I had once received training in how to close a sale, and I felt that this \u201ccounselor\u201d must\u2019ve been to the same sales training seminars.<\/p>\n<p>She finally gave in.<\/p>\n<p>The abuse escalated after the abortion. Pregnant again, she was \u201cso conditioned to being under his control\u201d she didn\u2019t resist a second abortion. She had one more abortion before breaking free from her abuser.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Opposition to Protecting People from Coerced Abortion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One would think a law against abortion coercion wouldn\u2019t be controversial. After all, aren\u2019t pro-choice people, well, <em>pro-choice<\/em>? Nevertheless, politicians opposed the law.<\/p>\n<p>Representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/kansas-legislature-sends-governor-bill-outlawing-abortion-coercion-maximum-25-year-sentence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jo Ella Hoye worried<\/a> about husbands who threaten to divorce their wives if they refuse abortion. She speculated these men could be convicted, even though there is nothing in the bill to indicate this. She says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">If you don\u2019t agree on a pregnancy outcome for abortion, I do think that should be able to be cause for divorce. I don\u2019t think that we should create a crime that would charge somebody if they just said, \u2018Hey, if you don\u2019t get an abortion, we\u2019re going to get divorced.\u2019 I think that does go too far.<\/p>\n<p>Hoye is fine with men threatening their pregnant wives with divorce and wants to protect them. She would kill the bill in its entirety, leaving women to be coerced into abortion in the most egregious ways.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/kansas-legislature-sends-governor-bill-outlawing-abortion-coercion-maximum-25-year-sentence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ford Carr<\/a>, a Wichita Democrat, also defended men who leave their pregnant partners when they refuse to obey them about aborting. He says:<\/p>\n<p>Quite honestly, oftentimes they\u2019re scared at the sound of, you know, \u2018There\u2019s going to be another life that is going to be a part of this and I\u2019m not ready for it. I had dreams, and I had aspirations, and this wasn\u2019t part of it. Then, you\u2019re welcome to go that direction on your own, but I don\u2019t want to.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Could a vindictive mother, could she then enact this and say that this was a definition of coercion? I think this is just a bridge too far.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Since in all cases a defendant is innocent until proven guilty, a \u201cvindictive mother\u201d would still have to prove her case in a court of law.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kansas-abortion-coercion-5fad478f4164c22f7f81b72268aa6f68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carr also said<\/a>, \u201cI just see how this could turn into a real, real sticky situation for a lot of young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He doesn\u2019t seem to care about the \u201csticky situation\u201d for the pregnant person.<\/p>\n<p>The bill was vetoed by Governor Laura Kelly.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/politics-government\/article287630845.html#storylink=cpy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Kansas City Star<\/em><\/a>, Kelly said that \u201cthreatening violence against someone else is already a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They quoted her saying:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I am concerned with the vague language in this bill and its potential to intrude upon private, often difficult, conversations between a person and their family, friends, and health care providers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">This overly broad language risks criminalizing Kansans who are being confided in by their loved ones or simply sharing their expertise as a health care provider.<\/p>\n<p>Is the language of the bill, quoted above, really \u201coverly broad\u201d?
